Minnesota State Capitol Grand Opening Celebration August 11-13

The Minnesota State Capitol Grand Opening Celebration will take place this weekend, August 11-13.

Starting this Friday, the State Capitol will be buzzing with activities, concerts, and tours the whole family can enjoy. Check out the full schedule of events online at mn.gov/mymncapitol.

Don’t Miss the Fireworks Saturday Night!

Governor Mark Dayton and Lt. Governor Smith invite Minnesotans to a special Minnesota-music themed fireworks show on Saturday, August 12 to celebrate the Grand Opening of the Minnesota State Capitol.

The fireworks extravaganza will start at 9:30 p.m. and will be synced to an all-Minnesota music soundtrack of 17 songs by 17 Minnesota artists. The spectacular 24-minute display is made possible by the generous support of JE Dunn, the construction company that served as the general contractor for the Capitol Restoration Project, and is designed and put on by RES Specialty Pyrotechnics.

Fun for the Whole Family, the Whole Weekend

The three-day event celebrates the restored “People’s House” with music, dance, tours, and more, including live performances by Cloud Cult, Polica, VocalEssence, and the Sounds of Blackness.

Each day starts with yoga on the Capitol lawn and features a Kid’s Zone, “Hotdish” lectures, and exclusive tours of the fully restored Capitol.

Metro Transit will provide free rides to the Capitol on Friday evening and all day Saturday and Sunday, and admission to the Celebration will be free of cost.
