Letter to the editor

The following letter to the editor that I wrote after reading the first Superintendent’s viewpoint article to was published in today’s Woodbury Bulletin.

New superintendent’s words, vision appreciated

Welcome Keith Jacobus to District 833 and to the community as the new superintendent since July 1, 2012.

I enjoyed reading his first Superintendent’s viewpoint article in Woodbury Bulletin (Aug. 1, 2012). I appreciated the opportunity to read about his vision for the district, his core beliefs, and his leadership approach. I can’t agree more with him when he says: “education will open the doors and fulfill the hopes and dreams of our students … it is imperative for every student to love coming to school and to love learning.”

It worries me when a child says: “School is boring. I don’t want to go to school.” It bothers me when people have no interest in learning.

Yes, it is imperative for every student to love coming to school and to love learning. For that to happen, it is imperative that school is challenging, students are inspired and encouraged to learn and to reach their full potential.

To love learning is to develop a growth mindset that values learning and growth.

School plays an important part in ensuring the success of every child. But it takes a village to raise and educate a child. Parents, schools and communities all have an important role to play. Only by working together can we provide the best opportunity for every child to learn, to succeed, and to become life-long learners.

I am looking forward to reading more of the Superintendent’s Viewpoint articles by Keith Jacobus. Wish him the best as he embarks on this new superintendent journey. The superintendent transition wasn’t a smooth one for the community, I am hopeful that Superintendent Jacobus will bring community together and will bring positive changes to the district.
